Wilburn Bealy Grisham

Wilburn Bealy Grisham, known as “Wib” to friends and “Gramps” to family, passed peacefully in his sleep on Born July 30, 1928, not far from the obscure Fannin County, Texas, village of Lone Elm, just a few miles north of Dodd City, his childhood was filled with modest, but happy, memories of playing in the creek with his brothers, visiting his grandparent’s farmhouse, creating toy cars out of empty bottles found under the house, and getting into various forms of mostly harmless youthful trouble. He was valedictorian of the Gober High School Class of 1944 and began college at the age of 16 at Texas A&M University. He graduated in 1949, and while working at Kress’s store met his future wife, Tillie, who fondly tells people she “picked him up at the Five and Dime.” After serving 2 years in the army, Wib returned to Texas, married his lovely bride on May 25, 1952, and began a career in the newspaper industry, first at the Denison Herald, followed by more than 35 years at the Sherman Democrat working in several editorial positions. Following his retirement, he and Tillie were able to enjoy and pester one another and successfully traveled to the 48 contiguous states. During his life he became the proud father of 4 children, Gramps to 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, and was honored to serve for many years as a Deacon and Elder at the Parkview Church of Christ (formerly Dewey Avenue Church of Christ). Family members fondly remember cross country camping trips where he missed exits repeatedly, going bowling, playing dominos, crushing cans in the garage, his dry sense of humor, watching him nap in his favorite recliner, and his talent for carpentry. He was preceded in death by his young son, Jeffrey Winston Grisham; his parents, John Reginald Grisham, and Rosa Lucille Bassham; older brother Kenneth Grisham; and younger brother John Wayne “Shorty” Grisham. Loved ones that will miss him dearly until they meet again are his beloved wife, Tillie Ann Brown Grisham; daughter Connie Heller and husband Freddy; son Brian Grisham; daughter Kay Kennedy and husband Kerry; granddaughter Kelli Taylor and husband Adam and their children Abby, Will, Aaron, Jessa, Jacob, and Ivy; granddaughter Kasey Cummins and husband Logan Adams and their son Owen; grandson Travis Heller and wife Caitlyn and son Henry; granddaughter Ariana Heller; grandsons Kealan, Kevan, and Kaleb Kennedy; brother Don Grisham and wife Diane; along with many other extended family and friends.
