Organizational history:
Our United Way was originally formed as the Sherman Community Chest in 1942, amid growing encouragement from the government for folks to support the national War Chest. For those first few years, donations went to the War Chest and local youth organizations. By 1951, the Denison Community Chest and several other local Chests had been formed and were operating to support their cities’ organizations. In 1969, the Community Chests came together deciding that collectively they could support the community better together thus transiting to the United Fund of Grayson County. We made our last name change in 1974 by joining the United Way worldwide family and becoming the United Way of Grayson County. Despite the name changes, our mission has always stayed the same, To improve lives mobilize the caring power of our community to advance the common good.
Program History:
-Tiny Toes: Tiny Toes began operations in January 2022 out of the growing concern that children birth to five are the fastest growing demographic in poverty in Grayson County. This two generation home visiting based program works to stabilize families and then offer ongoing parenting, developmental, and educational support for the entire family. -Imagination Library: The Imagination Library of Grayson County is an affiliate of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. The Imagination Library of Grayson County delivered it’s first books to Grayson County children in November of 2023. This program is a free book gifting program that mails a new age appropriate book to registered children aged birth to five each month. In the year of it’s operation, nearly 16,000 books have been mailed to almost 2,000 Grayson County children. To learn more visit unitedwaygrayson.org/il
-The Grayson County Diaper Bank: United Way of Grayson County received the Diaper Bank from TCOG in April of this year. Each month, we hold an open distribution to families in need. We supply the families with diapers and wipes, Diapers are a basic human need for babies but are expensive and there are few ways to receive assistance with them. We are proud to serve between 150-200 children monthly. The diaper relies solely on community donations to operate. To learn more visit unitedwaygrayson.org/diaper
