Texoma Family Shelter’s has proudly operated for over 36 years, and unique among shelters, it is open 24/7/365 and accepts men, women, and families in an extended stay program-based environment. The shelter’s goal is to keep families intact to alleviate the negative impact of homelessness on both children and parents.
The on-site case manager develops an individualized plan for each resident to help them get back to independent living. Residents receive help with applying for permanent housing, assistance programs, and health/childcare services, as well as assistance with job searches, life skills, budgeting, etc. Meals, laundry facilities and personal care supplies are all provided at no cost to help restore self-respect and enable residents to find employment.
Additionally, TFS offers services to prevent homelessness such as food boxes (seven days a week from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.), resource and social service referrals and classes in the new training center.
More people in Grayson County are becoming homeless EVERY month, service providers are unable to keep up with the demand. The U.S. Government Point in Time Count revealed 53 in Grayson County homeless people in 2023 vs.456 in 2024. The new year will most likely see that increase continue due to tax and rent increases as well as the economy.
What is worse, HUD funding that was designated for Texoma the last few years has been rerouted to the Texas Border for 2025, not only effecting Texoma Family Shelter but also the Salvation Army and Abigail’s Arms. Texoma Family Shelter will be struggling to replace the 103k that the HUD funding provided.
