DENTON — Sherman offensive coordinator Derek Thompson was one of six members of the University of North Texas’ 2020 Athletic Hall of Fame Class for his time quarterbacking the Mean Green from 2009-13.

Thompson is joined in the class by soccer player Jackie Kerestine (2011-15), football player Johnny Mata (1966-67), softball player Katya Muller-Winslow (2005-08), women’s basketball coach Tina Slinker (1989-2008) and men’s basketball player Tristan Thompson (2008-11).

One of the top quarterbacks in school history, Thompson led his team to the only Mean Green bowl victory (2014) in the last 16 years and just the program’s second bowl win.

He is third all-time on the UNT passing yardage list with 7.477, is fifth in career touchdown passes at 42, third in career completions at 636 and has the second-most 300-yard games with seven. During the 2013 season, Thompson helped the Mean Green to a 9-4 record after a 36-14 win over UNLV in the Heart of Dallas Bowl and he was named the MVP. UNT also received votes in the USA Today Coaches poll for the first time in a decade.
