AC’s Cawthon on 2021 College Football Hall of Fame ballot
Former Austin College head coach Pete Cawthon is one of several coaches on the 2021 College Football Hall of Fame ballot.
Cawthon started his college football career as AC's head coach and then went to Texas Technological College, now Texas Tech University, and finished with an overall 97-52-10 record. He went 21-20-4 from 1923-27 at Austin College and led the team to the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association title in 1923. Cawthon also was the men's basketball coach for AC as well.
He stepped away from coaching due to health issues and became a Southwest Conference official before Tech hired him in 1930 and during 11 seasons in Lubbock compiled a 76-32-6 mark, highlighted by a 10-1 record in 1938 and a No. 11 ranking in the final Associated Press poll.
Cawthon also was the offensive line for Alabama in 1942, the head coach of the NFL's Brooklyn Dodgers/Tigers the following two seasons and closed out his career as an assistant for the Detroit Lions in 1945-46.
He passed away in Sherman in 1962.
