Texas Rangers investigate fatal officer-involved shooting in Sherman
The Texas Rangers are investigating an officer-involved shooting that ended with a suspect dead in Sherman Tuesday morning..
At approximately 5:11 a.m. Tuesday morning Sherman police received a call from a female juvenile victim who reported that her father was being stabbed in the 1900 block of Pebblebrook Lane.
“At this time the crime scene has been turned over to the Texas Rangers and they are assuming the investigation of an officer involved shooting,” Sherman Police Chief Zachary Flores said.
When police arrived they reported hearing the victim screaming for help and proceeded to force entry into the home. Inside, officers encountered Chazz Hailey, an adult male, who was holding a knife.
“Officers negotiated with Chazz for about two minutes. Almost two minutes they tried to plea with him to drop the knife and to allow them to work it out and then to help him and allow them to help the victims.”
Flores said the negotiations were unsuccessful and the suspect retreated into a bathroom. Officers were able to break into the bathroom and found Hailey attacking an adult male victim and a female juvenile victim.
It was at this time that officers fire on the suspect, who was killed.
Officers attempted to provide lifesaving efforts on the adult male victim, but he was declared deceased at the scene. The female victim was initially transported to a local hospital, but was then transferred to a Dallas hospital in critical condition.
“Today’s incident was an act of violence that unfortunately couldn’t come to a peaceful resolution,” Flores said.
Police declined to go into detail about the relationship between the victims and the suspect, but said they were related to each other.
Flores said the three officers involved have been placed on paid administrative leave, as is procedure in this situation, Flores said. The Texas Rangers will continue to investigate the incident and will update as more information becomes available.
“Our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones today. We know that this has affected a great number of people,” Flores said. “We pray for a speedy recovery for the young lady who is currently fighting for her life.”
