He can’t fall down

This week, my oldest daughter has been fascinated with a new toy that her friend brought to our home. It’s a toy TV character that she can push, flip, and even throw in the air, but no matter what force she exerts on it, it always lands right-side up.

You can imagine the determination this excites. On more than one occasion she’s hollered for my attention, “look, mommy!,” as she demonstrates to me one more time that another attempt to get this toy to fall over has failed.

“He can’t fall down!” she screeches, truly bewildered.

Unlike my 4 year old, I understand that because of how the toy is weighted in the bottom, it can’t tip over. It will rock from side to side but it cannot fall down. The weight in the bottom will always bring it back to the up-right position, while evoking her most exuberant expressions of awe and wonder.

In recent weeks, I cannot help but look at my Heavenly Father and experience a similar fascination. Regardless of what circumstances have unfolded around me, however shaken the current social climate has become, I look on my Heavenly Father and I see one who is not shaken.

My daughter’s new-found favorite toy reminds me of the phrase, “He never falls off of His throne.” God’s word carries a weight that is grounding when times are not. Indeed, if the whole world was falling down around my ears, He and His word would remain, and because I am His and His word is in me, I can be confident that I will too.

I can look upon my God with the same fascinated confidence my daughter has in her toy, echoing the words, “He can’t fall down!”

“Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.” - Psalm 119:89
