SEWANEE, Tenn. — Colt Collins threw for 121 yards on 11-of-21 attempts, picked up 67 yards on the ground and was responsible for two of Austin College’s three touchdowns as the ‘Roos held off Sewanee, 21-14, in Southern Athletic Association action at Hardee-McGee Field at Harris Stadium.


It was the second straight victory and fourth win in the past five five games for Austin College (4-2, 3-1), which is tied with Trinity and Birmingham Southern for second place in the conference standings, just a half game behind Berry. The ‘Roos will host fifth-place Hendrix at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Jerry Apple Stadium.


The Tigers (0-7, 0-5) forced AC to punt on its opening drive but the ‘Roos were able to score on their next possession. Aaron Rideaux opening the scoring with a 21-yard TD catch from Collins.


After another punt by Sewanee, Austin College put together a 93-yard drive capped by a 47-yard run from Bo Garner with 13:42 left in the first half to give the ‘Roos the 14-0 lead.


With 6:35 left in the second quarter, Austin College was looking to pad its lead but Collins was picked off by Wesley Porter at the four-yard-line.


Sewanee was able to cut its deficit in half with a nine-play, 77-yard drive. Sam Everette had a one-yard TD run


After the Tigers did nothing on the first series of the second half, the ‘Roos needed just three plays to extend their advantage with a 72-yard run by Evan Powell made it 21-7 in favor of the visitors.


Austin College had two chances to put the game away in the fourth quarter. With 10 minutes left, a drive was halted at the Sewanee 14-yard line on a fourth-down incompletion.


Sewanee headed the other way and reached the AC 40 but turned the ball over on downs with 6:29 left.


Austin College’s second attempt to put the game away came up short as Matthew Smith missed a 25-yard field goal with 3:02 remaining.


The Tigers were able to get within a touchdown with an eight-play, 80-yard drive when Jacob Viccari caught a 43-yard pass from Alex Darras, who was 19-of-43 passing for 207 yards, to cut the deficit to 21-14 with 1:54 left.


Daniel May recovered the onside kick for Sewanee to have a chance to force overtime. But the ‘Roos had a pair of sacks and held on for the victory.


Powell recorded 144 yards on 11 carries to lead Austin College while Garner added 73 yards and a score on four carries.


Matthew Quenichet had seven tackles to lead the ‘Roos and Sharun Jones had three pass breakups.
