Former Sherman and Grayson College standout Chris Gittens was named the Eastern League Most Valuable Player for his performance during the 2019 season.
At the Double-A level for the Trenton Thunder, one of the Yankees’ farm teams, Gittens hit a career-high 22 home runs and leads the Eastern League in homers, RBI (75), on-base percentage (.392), slugging percentage (.497), and on-base plus slugging (.889) going into this past weekend.
The first baseman was honored by the Thunder before their game on Saturday against Reading.
Gittens, who was named to Eastern League’s All-Star Team and was also selected for the league’s Postseason All-Star Team, becomes the second player in franchise to earn the league’s MVP award, joining Brandon Laird in 2010.
Gittens was New York’s 12th-round selection out of Grayson College in 2014, where he played for two seasons after graduating from Sherman in 2012.
