PONDER — Powell Zuniga and Ethan Watson combined on a two-hit shutout as Gunter clinched third place with a 6-0 victory against Ponder in the District 9-3A finale on Wednesday afternoon.
Gunter (19-7, 8-4) led 3-0 in the fifth when the game was suspended due to bad weather on Tuesday night. The Tigers tacked on three more runs in the sixth inning.
Zuniga struck out 11 and allowed a hit and two walks in 4.2 innings before the game was stopped. Watson struck out three and allowed a hit in the final 2.1 frames and was 3-for-4 with a double, drove in a run and scored. Harrison Fox was 2-for-4 and scored twice, Zander Turner was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and scored and Carlos Chavez doubled and drove in a run for the Tigers.
Gunter will open the playoffs next week against Whitewright in a series at Anna. Game 1 is Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Game 2 is Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday is at a time to be determined. Ponder (11-12, 6-6) will take on 10-3A champion Van Alstyne. If Ponder had won, it would have forced a tie-breaker needed for the third and fourth seeds.
