On the heels of this month’s annual Howard Caylor Adult Trout Derby, it’s time for another angling event designed to bring families together in the outdoors, as well as to celebrate the City of Denison’s unique wintertime put-and-take trout fishery.
That winter long fishing celebration in D-Town continues this weekend on Saturday, Jan. 26th, with the 15th annual Family Fellowship Trout Derby being held at the fishing pond located at Denison’s Waterloo Lake Regional Park.
The derby officially kicks off at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning. The cost of the event is $7 for Denison adult residents and $5 for Denison youth. For non-residents fishing in the city’s family trout derby, the cost is $10 for adults and $7 for youth.
As was the case with the Adult Trout Derby earlier this month, this weekend’s fishing event will come on the heels of another big stocking of rainbow trout by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
“There were approximately 1,600 trout stocked on Thursday,” said Andrew Means, recreation program manager for the Denison Parks and Recreation Department. “It appears that the weather will be a little colder for this event than it was for the Adult Trout Derby a few weeks ago. But fortunately, the chances of rain in Saturday’s forecast appear to be diminishing.”
According to Means, the event is open to all ages and he encourages families to come out and enjoy the Great Outdoors.
“There will definitely be a lot of limits weighed in,” Means predicted. “Many golden trout were also stocked this time as well, and there will be special awards for those who catch a golden trout.”
Means says that there are two age divisions at the Family Fellowship Trout Derby with prizes being awarded in both. Plus, there will also be a casting contest as well.
“Online registrations are available or you can register at the park tomorrow morning starting at 8 a.m.,” said Means. “Free hats are being given out to the first 50 registrants, but those are going pretty fast.”
In addition to the prizes and awards, there will also be food and drink available too.
