Izard Mejia and Joel Nandin scored in the first half as the Sherman Bearcats won the Denison Cup on Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Faith at Munson Stadium.

Mejia’s goal came in the 16th minute off a pass from Jose Nandin and the second goal was a Nandin-to-Nandin connection in the 24th minute to account for the scoring while Jacob Prado earned the shutout for the Bearcats.

“The entire team put in a great effort and played well,” Sherman head coach Chico Aleman said.

Sherman earned a 0-0 tie against Dumas in tournament action on Friday before a 1-0 victory against Faith earlier on Saturday via a penalty kick.

The Bearcats (3-2-3) will host Denton Braswell on Tuesday night.

Denison 1, Bonham 1

The Yellow Jackets closed out their tournament with a tie against Bonham on Saturday at Munson Stadium.

Andres Menjivar scored off an assist by Reece Stange in the 19th minute and it stayed that way until Bonham netted the equalizer in the 59th minute.

In tournament action on Friday, Denison had a 1-0 loss against Faith.

The Yellow Jackets (1-2-1) play at The Colony on Tuesday night.

Melissa 2, Denison 0

The Melissa girls captured the title at the Denison Cup with a shutout victory over the host school on Saturday at Munson Stadium.

Melissa started the day with a 3-0 victory against Amarillo Palo Duro while Denison opened the day with a 4-0 victory against Anna.

In tournament action on Friday afternoon, Denison came away with a 3-2 victory against Amarillo Palo Duro while Melissa picked up a 6-0 win over Dumas.

Denison (6-2) will host Lake Dallas at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday at Munson Stadium.
