MELISSA — Junior Castleberry scored 21 points as Melissa defeated Denison, 87-64, on the first day of the Highway 5 Tournament.


Ricky Morning totaled 18 points, Ezra Monroe chipped in 16 points, Matt Holloway added nine points for the Cardinals.


Tarrence Gaines scored 22 points to lead Denison while Pierce Barker added 13 points and Rustin Workman chipped in eight points for the Yellow Jackets (2-6), who close out pool play against Bonham today at noon.


Denison started the tournament with a 63-36 loss against Crandall. Nate Uber hit five three-pointers for 15 points, Rustin Workman added six points and Zaelin Wimbish chipped in five points.


Melissa opened the tournament with a 60-53 victory against Bonham. Castleberry scored 17 points, Morning added 13 points and Monroe and Avery Fuller totaled 10 points apiece.


Crandall 61, Bonham 46


MELISSA — Josh Ukpe scored 28 points during Bonham’s loss against Crandall at the Highway 5 Tournament.


Tyler Rodriguez added 11 points for the Warriors (8-2), who play Denison to close out pool play at noon today.


Bonham opened the tournament with a 60-53 loss against Melissa. Ukpe scored 23 points, Tanner Reaves had 10 points, Rodriguez added nine points and Gage Cravin chipped in six points for the Warriors.


Van Alstyne opened the tournament with a 52-30 victory against North Lamar. Tyler Sperry scored 16 points, JJ Boling chipped in 15 points and Samuel Tormos totaled eight points for Van Alstyne.


Blue Ridge Tournament


Pottsboro 72, Wolfe City 41


BLUE RIDGE — Jaxon Recer scored 20 points as Pottsboro opened the Blue Ridge Tournament with a victory against Wolfe City on Thursday night.


Kai Barr added 17 points, Jake Williams chipped in nine points, Daniel Arnold had eight points and Cameron Curry finished with seven points for Pottsboro (8-0), which continues tourney action today at 9 a.m. against Blue Ridge and closes out pool play at 4:30 p.m. against McKinney North’s junior varsity.


Dayton Smith and Blake Threndyle each scored 10 points to lead Wolfe City while Jaren Brummett added seven points.


Blue Ridge 47, Callisburg 43


BLUE RIDGE — Utah Porath had 12 points, three rebounds and three steals as Blue Ridge opened its tournament with a victory against Callisburg on Thursday.


Luke Jenkins added 10 points, five rebounds and three steals and Ross Feagins finished with nine points, five steals and four rebounds for the Tigers.


Madill (Okla.) Tournament


Marietta (Okla.) 59, Gunter 47


MADILL, Okla. — Zander Turner scored 15 points during Gunter’s loss against Marietta on the first day of the Madill Winter Classic.


Kobe Hunter added 13 points, Clay Lemons finished with eight points and Kyle Watson chipped in seven points for Gunter (6-3), which faces either Howe or Sulphur today at noon.


Era Tournament


S&S 43, Collinsville 34


ERA — Jake Reynolds and Cole Sloan each scored 10 points as S&S defeated Collinsville to open the Era Tournament on Thursday.


Bryce Darnell and Angel Ortega added six points apiece for the Rams.
