BLUE RIDGE — Tyson Walters threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for a score as Blue Ridge opened District 9-3A (II) play with a 42-0 victory over Whitewright on Friday night.
Back in Class 3A with the UIL’s latest realignment, Blue Ridge (3-2, 1-0) came off the district bye a week ago and held Whitewright (0-5, 0-2) to just 25 yards in beating the Tigers for the first time since 1989. Through two weeks of 9-3A (II) action only Blue Ridge, Bells and Cooper remain undefeated and Blue Ridge plays at Cooper this coming Friday.
Blue Ridge deferred possession and kicked off to Whitewright. After forcing a turnover on downs Blue Ridge had the ball on its 39-yard line and two plays later Walters connected with Christian Enloe for a 62-yard touchdown with 9:05 remaining in the first quarter.
Walters was 4-of-7 passing for 139 yards and the two TDs while Enloe finished with two catches for 109 yards.
The 7-0 lead that held through the first quarter as back-to-back fumbles hindered the offenses. Blue Ridge opened the second quarter on its 36-yard line and drove eight plays covering 64 yards to score on a four-yard run by Walters.
Blue Ridge then recovered an onside kick and put together another scoring drive, getting to the 18-yard line before Garrett Mathers, who totaled 99 yards on 18 carries, had the touchdown run from there for a 21-0 advantage less than three minutes into the second quarter.
Whitewright tried to put points on the board before half-time but failed on a 31-yard field goal attempt.
Blue Ridge controlled the clock in the third quarter as it produced a 52-yard drive on eight plays that was capped by a 12-yard touchdown run from Brody Wiggins with 7:34 to go in the frame.
Whitewright was forced to punt from its 17-yard line on the ensuing possession and Caleb Jenkins blocked it. As the ball rolled into the end zone Wiggins recovered it for the score and give Blue Ridge a 35-0 advantage.
Blue Ridge’s final TD drives started on its 29-yard line and with nine minutes remaining Walters connected with Lucas Jenkins for a 26-yard touchdown pass.
Tre Jackson led with nine carries for 11 yards for Whitewright, which has the bye this week before hosting Cooper on October 19.
