GUNTER — The Gunter Tigers extended their winning streak against the Whitesboro Bearcats in a early-season clash with a 21-10 victory in non-district action on Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
It was the fifth straight victory by the Tigers (3-0) in the series and they outgained the Bearcats (2-1) on the ground 258-155.
Gunter took the ball first as Whitesboro deferred to the second half and put together a drive, scoring first on a 20-yard pass from Ethan Everson to Peyton Lowe in the middle of the quarter.
The Tigers forced a turnover on downs and Gunter then scored early in the second quarter on a one-yard run by Clayton Reed for the 14-0 advantage.
Whitesboro finally got on the scoreboard but was forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal by Isaac Castillo with 4:25 left in the half. Gunter quickly answered back with Dylan Jantz taking the ball and running 66 yards for the score going up 21-3 less than a minute later and carry that lead into the locker room.
Whitesboro came out in the second half and controlled the ball for most of the third quarter and scored from the two-yard line on a Scout Sanders run with 6:32 left in the frame to make it 21-10.
The Bearcats were able to hold the Tigers scoreless the rest of the way but were unable to mount a comeback.
Everson came up with an interception to end one Whitesboro drive and the Tigers also batted down a couple of passes. Gunter ultimately was able to run out the clock, getting to the one-yard line before taking a knee.
Jantz led the Tigers with 12 carries for 113 yards while Lowe added seven rushes for 50 yards and added a pair of catches for 36 yards.
Brooks Barker had 16 carries for 95 yards to pace Whitesboro while Sanders carried 13 times for 60 yards. Noah Greisen had two catches for 20 yards.
Gunter has another undefeated match-up this week when it travels to Pilot Point while Whitesboro hosts winless Farmersville.
