LEONARD — The Bonham Purple Warriors took a big half-time lead on the way to a 48-7 victory over the Leonard Tigers in non-district action on Friday night despite a 40-minute weather delay before the game kicked off
It took only 19 seconds for the Warriors (2-1) to score on the opening play. Tyler Rodriguez broke free on a 64-yard scoring run to set the tone for the rest of the night with the early 7-0 advantage.
The Tigers (0-2) took the ensuing kickoff to the Warrior 47-yard line. But Leonard was stopped on downs at the Warrior 30.
A few minutes later Bonham recovered a fumble at the Leonard 28. Dylan Karl plunged in from the one for the touchdown with 3:34 left in the first period. Karl finished the night with 12 carries for 103 yards.
The Tigers drove 54 yards to the Warrior 26 but again it was a fumble that halted the drive. Rodriguez next connected with Jerell Stewart on an eight-yard TD pass that brought the score to 20-0 at the 9:12 mark of the second period.
Leonard next drove 75 yards with the key play being a 27-yard run by D.J. Brown. Nathan Harris completed the possession with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:52 left in the half.
But there was an immediate answer by Bonham as Rodriguez threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Stewart for a 27-7 lead at the break. Stewart totaled three catches for 74 yards.
The Warriors broke things open with three touchdowns in the third quarter. Rodriguez kicked the quarter off with a TD pass of 23 yards to Noah Shellman less than three minutes into the frame.
Rodriguez was 5-of-8 passing for 147 yards and the three TDs and also added 73 yards and a score on two carries.
Niyee Boston returned an interception 17 yards for the next touchdown and then with 6:36 left in the period Karl scored on a 30-yard scamper.
Cody Houser led the Tigers with 15 carries for 72 yards while Brown added 11 carries for 65 yards and Harris ended with nine carries for 57 yards.
