POTTSBORO — For the second straight season the Gunter Tigers kept the Pottsboro Cardinals off the scoreboard on the way to a 27-0 victory in non-district action at Jim Henderson Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
Pottsboro (1-1) had the first possession but the Gunter defense held them to a three-and-out. Gunter (2-0) took over on its 47-yard line and three plays later Dylan Jantz scored from the eight-yard line. A bobbled snap and the extra point failed with Gunter settling for a 6-0 lead with 9:23 remaining the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Jantz returned an interception 11-yards for a touchdown to bring the lead to 13-0 after Evan Gonzalez kicked the extra point with 5:24 left in the half. Gunter’s defense continued to stymie the Cardinals and that was the margin going into the locker room.
Gunter received the ball to open the second half and it was Pottsboro’s defense holding firm by stopping the Tigers at the 27-yard line. Pottsboro was unable to get anything going and failed to convert with Gunter taking over on their 45 following a punt.
Braiden Clopton had a 41-yard touchdown run — his only carry of the night — as Gunter extended the lead to 20-0 with 5:27 left in the third.
Gunter would take the ball from their 39 and drive to the Pottsboro 24-yard line and Jantz added his third touchdown with six minutes left to fashion the final score.
Ethan Everson led Gunter with 104 yards on five carries. Jantz added 74 yards on 16 carries and had two receptions for 49 yards. Everson completed 5-of-10 passes for 83 yards but did throw two interceptions.
Will Cates led the Cardinals with 65 yards on 15 carries and Zach Talley added 56 yards on 15 carries.
Gunter will play Whitesboro this week at home while Pottsboro will play defending Class 2A Division II state champion Munster at home as well.
