COLLEGE STATION — The Gunter Tigers won the Division III state 7-on-7 tournament title with a 34-27 victory against Palmer on Friday at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex.

After winning its pool on Thursday, Gunter took care of business in bracket play, edging Palmer, which forced overtime in the final minutes. The Tigers scored on their OT possession and held Palmer out of the end zone to claim the crown in the first Division III (1A-Class 3A Division II) tournament.

Gunter joins Melissa and Celina as Texoma teams to capture state 7-on-7 championships.

The Tigers beat Tenaha, 27-19, in the semifinals after a 20-13 win against Hearne in the quarterfinals. Gunter opened bracket play with a 34-20 win against Lexington.

Melissa made it to the Division II semifinals before losing, 40-22, against Pleasant Grove. The Cardinals opened bracket play with a 46-40 double overtime victory against Sunnyvale, then beat Decatur, 42-34, and topped Goliad, 30-15, in the quarterfinals.

Celina opened the Division II bracket with a 35-27 overtime victory over Marion before losing, 41-28, to Goliad in the second round.

Bonham suffered a 28-27 loss to Raymondville in first round of the Division II bracket.
