McKINNEY – Several area tennis players have advanced at the Class 2A Region II tennis tournament at McKinney Boyd on Wednesday.
The final day of the tournament to determine the two state qualifiers in each bracket is Thursday.
In boys singles, Sam Rayburn’s Casey Payne opened with a 6-3, 6-0 victory and was scheduled to face Celeste’s Benjamin Lewis in the quarterfinals.
Wolfe City’s Billy Webb started with a 6-0, 6-4 victory against Eberardo Lara of Longview Chadwick. Webb was scheduled to face Archer City’s Davis Mays in the quarterfinals.
Bells’ Zac Sprayberry had a first-round bye and was slated to face Adrian Patterson of Linden-Kildare in the quarterfinals.
In girls singles, Blue Ridge’s Kendall McCarley won her first match, 7-5, 6-2, against McLeod’s Jillian Ellis. She was set to face Kamryn Hrncirik of Seymour in the quarterfinals.
Bells’ Zoe Sprayberry had a 6-0, 6-0 win over Hawkins’ Brenna Bogard and goes up against Aubrey Wiley of Hico in the quarterfinals.
Marissa Sheets of Wolfe City topped Era’s Sydney Lane, 6-0, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals against Peyton Turner of Linden-Kildare. Turner eliminated Raylee Mathis of Sam Rayburn, 6-0, 6-0.
In boys doubles, Blue Ridge’s Nolan Henderson and Jared Stroman had a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Poolville’s Stone Stegall and Dillon Boring.
Bells’ Nathan Clark and Jorge Arevalo opened with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Linden-Kildare’s John Randall Fitts and Dayton Hamilton.
Wolfe City’s Jacob Pack and Jed Cagle opened with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Martin’s Mills’ Burcham and Hernandez.
Sam Rayburn’s Dax Stewart and Ryan Mussett lost against Archer City’s Delarosa and Mabry, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
In girls doubles, the Blue Ridge team of Shelby Gerner and Ellery Martin had a first-round bye and face Hamilton’s Haile and Polster in the quarterfinals.
Wolfe City’s Kiann Northcutt and Erin Moore opened with a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Sam Rayburn’s Alexander and Cockrill.
In mixed doubles, the Bells duo of Dustin and Meagan Hardin started with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Longview Chadwick’s Cadenas and Poindexter.
Blue Ridge’s James Hulsey and Tess Matthews lost against Poolville’s Brady Blevins and Trinity Johnson in the first round.
Sam Rayburn’s Holden Reaves and Harley Chaffin lost against Gary’s Leann Odom and Landon Youngblood.
