The Lady Yellow Jackets found themselves down big after the top of the first inning and the margin currently reflects their location in the district standings. While Denison was unable to dig itself out the former hole, the team still has time to get out of the latter.
“We’re going to show up one game at a time. That’s our mindset. That’s the way it has to be,” Denison head coach Jeremy Green said. “We’ve just got to do a better job of execution. Focus on Braswell next.”
After falling behind by eight runs after two innings, the Lady Jackets ended up with a 13-3 loss in five innings against Denton in 5-5A action at Denison on Tuesday afternoon.
Both teams were seeking their first district victory on the year and Denison (2-10-1, 0-3) is now looking up at everybody in the standings with Braswell, Denton Ryan and Sherman left in the first half of the schedule still to come. The Lady Jackets need to get going in a hurry, however, since they will have to leapfrog three teams over the final nine games to have a chance for a second straight playoff berth.
“We’ve got to show up and keep putting in the work and execute on game day,” Green said. “We’ve got to play better. We’re a team that’s capable of putting up seven-eight runs.”
Denison lost its first two district games by a total of three runs but the match-up against Denton (8-7, 1-3) got out of hand early.
The Lady Broncos jumped to a 5-0 advantage as six of the first seven batters reached against Hailey Jaresh and the lone out was a sacrifice. Kaylin Jackson dunked a one-out RBI single inside the right-field line, Maris Minter had an RBI single to left, a run scored on an error as Denison tried for a force at home, a wild pitch made it 4-0 and then Autumn Cooper finished the outburst with an RBI single as Denton batted around.
The Lady Jackets, who finished with just four hits, had a chance to cut into the deficit immediately but left the bases loaded in their first at-bat. Yvette Moreno walked between two outs, Kayla Daugherty was hit by a pitch and Elizabeth Linwood singled to left but the rally ended there.
Denton took an 8-0 lead in the second when a two-out throwing error allowed a pair of runs in and Madi Villarreal reached on an infield single off Jaresh for the third run.
Kaylee Walters put Denison on the board in the bottom of the inning with an inside-the-park home run. Jacque Matthews singled with one out and with two down Walters went the other way with a perfectly-place slow roller in the right-center gap that made it all the way to the wall as she raced around the bases.
Gabby Naples led off the third with a double to center and Cat Carter had a one-out RBI single as Denton went up 9-2.
The Lady Jackets loaded the bases again in the bottom of the third but only came away with a run. Daugherty started the frame with a walk, Linwood was hit by a pitch and Haley Earnhart reached on a fielder’s choice when Jackson tried to get the force at third but everyone was safe.
Daugherty scored on a wild pitch and it was 9-3 with two runners in scoring position and no outs. But Linwood was thrown out at home trying to steal on a throw back to the pitcher and Earnhart was stranded at third.
Denton tacked on four more runs in the fourth. Cooper hit a two-run homer to right center, The Lady Broncos loaded the bases and scored on a force at third and Erica Samingo pushed the lead to the final margin when she walked with the bases loaded.
The Lady Jackets left seven on base, had another thrown out at home and the bottom four spots in the lineup went a combined 1-for-9 with six strikeouts.
