FRISCO — Brooks Barker had 136 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and Whitesboro overcame a slow start to beat Maypearl, 36-26, in a Class 3A Division II Region II bi-district game at Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The Bearcats (8-3), who have won eight games for just the second time since 1948 (10 in 2013) scored four straight touchdowns to take control of the game and advance to the area round, where they will take on Jefferson at 2 p.m. on Friday at Emory Rains.
Maypearl (7-4) opened the game with an 87-yard touchdown return on the kickoff by Tariq Masey. The Panthers added another score on a three-yard run by Gunner Petty to take a 12-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest.
Whitesboro started the comeback with a five-yard run by Scout Sanders, who finished with 20 carries for 65 yards, to come within five and Sanders capped a drive that put the Bearcats up, 14-12, with 7:30 left in the second quarter.
Barker made it a 21-12 margin with a one-yard touchdown run with 2:24 remaining in the half.
The string of Whitesboro touchdowns continued in the third quarter when Barker scored from four yards out.
In the closing seconds of the third, Maypearl found the end zone again with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Petty to Alec Wright and Whitesboro led 29-19.
The Bearcats widened the lead when Bradley Klingler ran back an interception 38 yards for a touchdown with 4:39 remaining.
A minute later Petty found Kenneth McGinn for a 22-yard TD pass but the Panthers never overcome that double-digit deficit.
