SHERMAN — Nathaniel Omayebu hit the weight room hard between his sophomore and junior seasons, and transformed himself into a running back who could finish among the Sherman greats of all time.

Omayebu is the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Class 4A-5A Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 1,507 yards and 17 touchdowns on 185 carries in a resurgent season for the Bearcats.

In Omayebu’s first game as a junior, he exploded for 235 yards with three long touchdowns at Sulphur Springs, all on consecutive touches that exceeded 50 yards.

He topped that a week later, setting a school single-game mark with 312 yards in a 31-28 win against Frisco Liberty.
