GUNTER — In the early part of the season, the new-look Gunter offense had some tough moments.
By the end of the year, however, it was worthy of a championship.
Powering the unit were a pair of seniors who turned the playoffs into their personal playground.
Senior quarterback Trey Carr and senior running back Colson Stovall helped lead the Tigers to the first state championship in school history after a 43-7 victory against Boling in the 3A Division II title game.
It was the fifth time in sixth playoff games, and the 10th time on the season, Gunter scored at least 43 points. The unit set a school record with 671 points.
Stovall ran for 1,810 yards and 30 touchdowns on 232 carries and was the Offensive Player of the Game in the title contest.
Carr finished with 165 carries for 1,049 yards and 16 TDs while throwing for 1,063 yards and 12 touchdowns with just three interceptions and was the MVP in 6-3A (II).
The duo has been named the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Class 2A-3A Co-Most Valuable Players for the 2016 season.
