GUNTER — As his decade of leading the Tigers was coming to a close, Jake Fieszel saw the season end in the best way possible.

Gunter capped off a 16-0 year and earned the Class 3A Division II state championship win an impressive 43-7 victory over Boling.

It was the largest margin of victory in the Division II title game since the UIL split 3A in 1998.

Above all, it was the first state title in program history. The Tigers broke the previous school marks for victories (12) and points scored — it was 537 and is now 671 — and advanced past the region final for the first time.

“This program’s been knocking on the door for a long, long time,” Fieszel said. “To break through that ceiling is unbelievable. It’s been an unreal season.”

For presiding over such a dominant season, Fieszel has been named the Herald Democrat All-Texomaland Class 2A-3A Coach of the Year for the 2016 season. It is the second time he has won the award (2007).
