As January continues, there are several events coming up over the next few weeks that local outdoors enthusiasts might want to jot down on the calendar.
From fly fishing and fly tying for bass, bluegills and trout in local waters to an annual Ducks Unlimited quacker backer gathering — with some great Cajun food — there’s a little something for everyone in the next month or so.
Red River Rendezvous
An annual feature on the January calendar, the Red River Fly Fishers will hold their yearly Red River Rendezvous Fly Tying Extravaganza next weekend from Jan. 27 to 28.
This year, the fly tying gathering — which attracts dozens of participants from all over Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana — will move to the Recreation Hall at Eisenhower State Park on the shores of Lake Texoma.
Admission into Eisenhower SP is $5 per day per person. The cost for the event itself is $5 per person for the weekend. Dinner will be provided by the Red River Fly Fishers on Friday night while Saturday meals will reportedly be pot luck style.
To pre-register for the event, e-mail the club at: email@example.com . Or call RRFF members Joe Parkes at 903-328-8232 or Jim Runnels at 903-744-2860.
Red River Fly Fishers 2017 Meetings
The Red River Fly Fishers’ second monthly meeting of the New Year will take place at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7 in the conference room of Sherman’s Baylor Scott & White Surgical Hospital.
Other RRFF monthly meetings scheduled this year include: March 7, April 4, May 2, June 6, July (To Be Determined), Aug. 1, Sept. 5, Oct. 3, Nov. 7 and Dec. 5 (the group’s annual Christmas dinner gathering at the North Rig Grill in Denison).
The group will hold its second fly tying session of 2017 on Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m., also in the conference room at Baylor Scott & White Surgical Hospital.
Other scheduled RRFF fly tying sessions this year include: March 14, April 11, May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10 and Nov. 14. With the approach of the Christmas holidays, there is no scheduled fly tying session in December.
In addition to the club’s regular meetings and fly tying sessions, the group also has several other events this year including the Red River Rendezvous Fly Tying Extravaganza (Jan. 27-28, see above); four GO Fish! events at Eisenhower State Park on May 13, June 3, Aug. 26 and Oct. 7; and the annual Texoma on the Fly event on Sept. 16 at Eisenhower State Park.

Texoma Ducks Unlimited Couple’s Event
Next month, the Texoma Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its annual DU Couple’s Cajun Dinner in Sherman, offering a festive night of superb cuisine, door prizes, raffles, a silent auction and a live auction.
Before the evening is done, there will be plenty of opportunity for attendees to take home the latest in sporting firearms, hunting and fishing gear, artwork, decorative items and plenty more.
While details are still being finished up on the annual fundraiser, longtime Texoma DU worker Jim Lillis says that the event will be held on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Sherman Municipal Building Ballroom across from Sherman’s Bearcat Stadium.
Blue River Fly Fishing Classic
The 2017 version of the Blue River Fly Fishing Classic is scheduled for March 4 at the Blue River Public Fishing and Hunting Area.
Running from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., the price is $35 per contestant. Monies raised by the trout fishing event are reportedly monitored by the Blue River Association and go directly into the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s work on the Catch-and-Release fishing section at the Johnston County stream.
Those competing in the friendly event will be limited to a single mystery fly pattern, with two of those flies to be given out prior to the beginning of the competition. Once the two flies are lost, the competitor is out of the event.
Other rules apply, including some on measuring and scoring fish, keeping score cards, retying flies, etc.
The deadline to enter the 2017 event is Feb. 15 and space is limited. To obtain an entry form, contact firstname.lastname@example.org
An entry form will be sent as an attachment that each competitor will need to print out, fill in and mail with the entry fee included. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to competitors once an entry is officially received.
