Lourden Bell netted two goals on corner kicks and Veronica Sosa supplied the other on Tuesday night as Sherman’s girls soccer team beat Saginaw Boswell, 3-0, at Bearcat Stadium in the home opener for the Lady Bearcats.

It was also the season debut for the team following last weekend’s bad weather which wiped out the tournament Sherman was entered in.

Bell’s first goal came five minutes in on a corner kick from Brittny Thomas that Bell headed straight in from the far post, and the Lady Cats held a 1-0 halftime lead. Then in the second half, Sosa slipped behind the defense about 15 minutes in and buried the second score. Bell added her second goal about 10 minutes later when she volleyed another Thomas corner into the goal.

“One of the cleanest games I’ve ever seen the girls play,” Sherman head coach Anthony Shearer said. “Big goals from our seniors and great defense from our back line … Huge program win for us.”

Andrea Orellana made nine saves to preserve the clean sheet for the Lady Cats (1-0), who are in the Aledo tournament this weekend and will start with Waxahachie on Thursday afternoon.

Boys Non-district Sherman 2, Highland Park 1

HIGHLAND PARK — The Bearcats scored goals on either side of halftime to stun Highland Park on the road.

Sebastian Cienfuegos opened with a goal 20 minutes in off a cross from the right flank to give Sherman a 1-0 lead at intermission. Then with 15 minutes left, Tristen Van Sant scored on a Cienfuegos assist from the top of the box and into the lower left hand corner of the net.

Sherman (1-1) will take on Boerne Champion at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Georgetown tournament.

Melissa 1, Denison 0

The Yellow Jackets opened the season with a non-district loss against Melissa at Dr. Rene and Eva Gerard Field at Munson Stadium on Tuesday night.

Melissa earned the only goal in the 64th minute.

“For the most part it was inside the 18s. I thought we did a good job with possession,” Denison head coach Scotty Voight said. “We just couldn’t connect. Overall the effort was good.”

Osvaldo Delarosa and Kevin Roblero-Perez each played a half in net and combined to make five saves for Denison, which hosts its Varsity Cup starting on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets face Dumas at 5 p.m.
