Every student has unique needs and goals. Sherman ISD is committed to helping all children thrive by supporting families with educational resources, guidance and connections to essential community services.
This past week, SISD hosted an informational parent night on World Dyslexia Awareness Day (October 8). District dyslexia support providers shared insight on how dyslexia impacts students’ lives and how parents can help support them.
“The best gift our dyslexia students can receive is time and patience, and these events are helpful because they provide eye-opening information and tools families can use,” said Kerry Bedgood, Sherman ISD Coordinator of 504, dyslexia and interventions. “We were able to guide families in hands-on activities to put themselves in their students’ shoes, which helped them better understand what their student may face on a day-to-day basis with dyslexia.”
On October 28, SISD and regional partners will host the Connecting the Dots Expo, which connects students with disabilities and their families to valuable community resources. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Sherman High School (2907 W. Travis St.) and will feature breakout sessions addressing different topics and disabilities. Vendors who provide specific services for special needs students and their families will also be present. RSVPs are encouraged at http://bit.ly/R10-CTD, but not required.
Below is a breakdown of the sessions:
10:30-11:30 a.m.
Session 1: Essential Resources for Individuals with a Communication Impediment – Learn about tools available through the Texas Department of Public Safety to register your child with a communication impediment to assist responding emergency personnel.
Session 2: Transition Elementary Through High Schools – Students and families will explore resources and tips for preparing for life after high school.
12-1 p.m.
Session 1: Government Benefits – Hear a general overview of government benefits and learn the importance of accessing Medicaid Waiver programs.
Session 2: Youth Workshop (ages 14-26) – Attendees will recognize their strengths and learning difficulties to maximize their potential.
Through these events, Sherman ISD continues its mission to provide support and resources for students with disabilities, empowering families with knowledge and connecting them to essential services.
