For several years, the recruitment of a new grocery store for south Sherman has been a recurring priority for city leaders. Now, that dream could be one step closer to coming true.
City Manager Robby Hefton teased the possible development of a grocery store in the Sherman Crossroads development Tuesday morning before crowds at the Kidd-Key Auditorium. The announcement came as a part of the annual Mayor’s Roundtable discussion that featured businessman Ross Perot Jr. this year.
“So here’s a little bit of a teaser of an announcement that is a little bit confidential, so we are having to be careful here,” Hefton said
“At Sherman Crossroads, which is on the south part of town, at (FM) 1417 (and US Highway) 75, Jeff (Harkinson) and his group have done a great job of developing that area,” Hefton continued. “There is currently under contract a 22-acre site for sale with that land to a major grocer whose name we cannot reveal.”
In recent years, the city council have discussed the need for grocery stores in areas of the city that are currently underserved. Among the areas that have been highlighted are portions of east Sherman and southern portions of the city that are currently in a major growth corridor.
City officials declined to say who the potential grocery tenant is, but said additional information should be available sometime early next year.
“The City of Sherman has been courting grocers for several years to try and bring a national, name-brand chain to the south side of the city,” Community and Support Services Manager Nate Strauch said in an email Wednesday. “Those efforts have found some success, as 22 acres in Sherman Crossroads are currently under contract with a major grocery store that we think is really going to get people excited.
“The city is currently working with the developer to prepare the site for construction, but several hurdles still need to be cleared. If all goes according to plan, we would expect a formal announcement in the first quarter of 2025.”
