“Put out the best, most honest newspaper you can today, and put out a better one the next day.” — Ben Bradlee, editor of The Washington Post during Watergate.
I’m sure I’ve used this quote before, but it’s just so perfect. It sums up how I approach this job and how everyone at Texoma Marketing and Media Group, which publishes the Herald Democrat, approaches it.
We are committed to growing and serving our community in the best way we can, but we need your help to do that. We want your feedback on what we’re covering and what we may be missing. We need you to send us tips and interesting human interest topics we might be able to cover.
We also need feedback on how we’re doing.
I hear from some of you from time to time, but it’s often the same people. I want each of you to have a voice because the Herald Democrat is here to cover your community.
That’s why starting Thursday we’ll hold our first stop on a listening tour from 9 to 11 a.m. at CJ’s coffee in Denison. I and Real Estate Editor and education reporter Rhea Bermel will be there to chat with you, answer your questions and hear your feedback.
If you can’t make it though, don’t sweat. We’ll also be visiting Sherman and several other communities we serve. We want you to feel comfortable talking with us. We want you engaged in discussions about the things we report, whether in letters on the opinion page or comments on Facebook.
We’re part of this community, too. We live next door to you. Shop at the same stores. Eat at the same restaurants. Attend the same churches. And celebrate and mourn together.
This listening tour will be a way for us to strengthen that bond and get to know you, our readers better. So stop by CJ’s. There will be a sign on the table, and we’ll be there ready to talk.
Happy birthday to W.D. Jackson, Chris Stevenson, Chadsidy Sanders, John Townsend, Ian Osborne, Gavin Higgins and Larry Brown, all of Sherman; Andy Ray of Sadler; John Townsend of Bonham; and John Sturdivent of Fresno, California.
