The Sherman Independent School District is attempting to ram through a $308 million bond package on the people of Sherman. The purpose is to build new schools to replace schools that are still perfectly acceptable and spend millions on refurbishing a football stadium.
This money amounts to nearly $9,000 for every man, woman and child in Sherman. With most people in Sherman not being responsible for property taxes the burden will be on homeowners and small businesses. This is at a time when school choice and vouchers will lessen the importance of an inferior public education system.
Schools in Whitesboro, Tom Bean, Howe and Pottsboro are all superior with a lower tax rate. It is time to tell the SISD that the toy-buying spree is over until fiscal responsibility is brought back into the formula. Just say no.
