A year ago last week, I began my journalism career as a reporter with the Herald Democrat.

In December 2015, I had just graduated from college and had already secured this job. I packed up my bags, found an apartment and moved to Sherman. I remember that in the weeks leading up to my first day of work on Jan. 11, 2016, I was a near nervous wreck.

I knew I was to cover the police and fire beat, but I really didn’t know what that entailed. Doubts ran through my mind; I didn’t know whether I could do this job. I didn’t know whether I truly had the skill set, and I worried I couldn’t actually write every day.

Despite my journalism education, internships and experience since high school, there was a learning curve. You never really know how to do something until you do it, and then it’s a continuous learning process. That first story I wrote for this newspaper was the hardest, and that first week was the most exhausting. But as the weeks passed, the job got easier. Now, I have reached a point where I feel like I know what I’m doing — most of the time.

Looking back on this past year, I have experienced some crazy and unique things. I have covered everything from house fires to vehicle wrecks, city meetings to court hearings and tragedies to celebrations. I have been on the scene of breaking and developing situations, and I have met many interesting people along the way. I have witnessed some of the best and worst of this region.

As with the nature of this particular beat, the events of the day can be emotionally draining and sometimes heartbreaking. But each day is different, and the news is always changing. I learn something new each day, and I keep trying to become better at what I do. I’m always surprised by what Grayson County holds and surprised by how much I enjoy living here.

I’m looking forward to another year of reporting in Grayson County.
