FORT WORTH — A 36-year-old man faces a murder charge after police say he intervened in a couple’s argument, then later shot the boyfriend in the back.

Moises S. Flores was arrested on a murder warrant Monday at his Fort Worth residence.

He is accused of fatally shooting Branden Scott Cornell, 25, on the night of July 14.

Cornell and his girlfriend were arguing at a bus stop near the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 3851 Airport Freeway, close to Beach Street, after being asked to leave a residence where they had been staying, according to homicide Sgt. Joe Loughman.

"Based on what we have been told, this was a mostly verbal argument," Loughman said. "The female does say that she pushed the victim and that she was pulled off the bench by her foot by the victim."

Flores approached the couple carrying a handgun, Loughman said.

"He appeared to be attempting to intervene on the part of the female," Loughman said.

Cornell walked away from the bus stop but later returned and tried to talk with his girlfriend.

"The suspect instructed the victim to go away," Loughman said.

Cornell had turned to walk away when police say Flores shot him. Cornell died a short time later at John Peter Smith Hospital from a gunshot wound to the back.

Flores fled in his vehicle, Loughman said.

He said homicide detectives canvassed the area for the vehicle and found it the next morning.

"Detectives then located the suspect walking away from his residence," Loughman said. "The suspect voluntarily came to speak with us and provided information as to his involvement in this offense."

Flores was in the Mansfield Jail on Tuesday, with bail set at $100,000.

The shooting set off panic among Wal-Mart employees and customers, who hid in an employee locker room.
