SADLER — Voters will soon decide whether Sadler & Southmayd Consolidated Independent School District will be able to restructure their tax rate to maximize funds received from the state. S&S CISD officials anticipate that the changes will be sustainable into the future.

At their Monday meeting the S&S CISD approved a restructuring of their tax rate. A tax ratification election will be held in September, and voters will decide if the changes will be enacted.

The district’s current tax rate is $1.30 per $100 valuation altogether and is made of two parts: maintenance and operations and interest and sinking. If the district keeps the tax rate at $1.04 for M&O and 26 cents for I&S, the district will generate $573,133 less in funds than they did during the 2014-2015 school year.

Hunter proposed that the district restructure the M&O and I&S rates so that the district can maximize state funding, generate $300,000 and not increase the tax rate. He proposed that the district increase the M&O rate from $1.04 to $1.17 and decrease the I&S rate from 26 cents to 13 cents. This would keep the tax rate the same, at $1.30.

The district will use reserve money to pay its bond debt. In 2017 the amount of the district’s bond payment is expected go down, S&S CISD Business Manager Stephanie Maher said on Thursday. The district expects to generate enough tax revenue off the I&S rate to pay its future bond payments.

Should voters approved the proposed changes, Maher said, the district will keep the rates the same into the foreseeable future. Unless, she said, there is another bond package.

Early voting in the tax ratification election will take place Aug. 26 through Sept. 8. Times and locations for early voting include from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the S&S CISD Administration Office, and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at S&S High School, room 201. On Election Day, residents can vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at both the S&S CISD Administration office and at the S&S Elementary School gym foyer.
