Two people are dead after a fire truck driving to Arkansas collided with a car near Bonham.

At 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the fire truck was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 82 near F.M. 121 when a front left tire blew out on the truck. The driver then lost control of the vehicle, and the truck crossed into the westbound lane. The truck and a westbound approaching vehicle both veered into the ditch where the vehicles collided, Department of Public Safety Trooper Mark Tackett said.

Jose Chavez, 69, and a passenger, Ana Chavez, both of Reno, Texas, died at the scene. The fire truck was driven by Christopher Nelson, 22, of Austin, Arkansas. A passenger in the fire truck was transported to Texoma Medical Center from injuries sustained in the crash. Tackett said the fire truck was recently purchased from the North Shore Volunteer Fire Department by the Austin Volunteer Fire Department in Arkansas.

"They had just driven down and bought the truck, and they were driving it back to Arkansas to get it ready for use," Tackett said. "It wasn’t a local fire truck; it wasn’t in service."
