VAN ALSTYNE — The city of Van Alstyne has placed its fire chief on paid administrative leave indefinitely for overspending.

Chief Landon Smith was officially put on leave Friday due to "budgetary matters," said Van Alstyne Mayor Larry Cooper.

"Chief Smith had a vision and aspirations for the department that were too big for the budget," Cooper said.

Smith spent more than the budget would allow, but Cooper said he could not comment on specific details. He added that Smith is "well thought of" in the community.

It was City Manager Frank Baker who put Smith on administrative leave, Cooper said. Baker is currently on vacation and could not be reached.

As of Tuesday, an interim Fire Chief had not been appointed.

Attempts to reach Smith on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
