With the spring sports season cancelled by the UIL because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Herald Democrat is putting a spotlight on the seniors who had their high school careers abruptly come to an end.
College plans: Blinn College and then on to Texas A&M to major in Sports Management.
Superstitions, rituals or traditions before or after competing: I had to wear the same leggings every year to throw in, even when it was hot outside and shorts were provided.
Song or music that prepares you for competition: I just tend to listen to the music of the person that has the aux. I’m not picky.
Favorite subject/class: English.
Favorite teacher and why: I don’t have a favorite teacher because I know that every teacher I had wanted the best for me.
Favorite coach and why: I loved and appreciated each and every coach of mine because they pushed me to be the best version of myself.
Best teammate and why: It’s hard to pick one, so I’ll just say I’ve always believed the best teammate is the one who puts the team above themselves and gives their best every rep.
Best high school sports memory: Getting to throw the discus at the regional track meet last year.
Best high school non-sports memory: All the Ag and Choir trips I got to go on with my friends.
What you love about your sport: I love that the shot put and discus are different than most sports and it may look easy but it takes a lot of focus on each movement of a spin to accomplish a great throw.
Favorite sports movie and why: "Remember the Titans" because it show how the team overcomes diversity after realizing there is no “I” in Team.
Describe the Gunter Class of 2020: Winners.
Biggest lesson learned: The biggest lesson sports has taught me is to always try to be at least 1% better than you were before.
Biggest influence in your life: My family. They’re always there to encourage me to do my best.
Athlete you look up to: My older sisters, Kerra and Connor. Going through high school I always pushed myself to not only do as well as they did, but I also wanted to beat their personal records so I could have family bragging rights.
Reaction to the season being cancelled: I was heartbroken and discouraged about what was happening but tried to make the best of it because I know there will always be hard things to face in life and it’s important to find a way to overcome them.
Message to your teammates: Thank you for making practices fun and bearable. Love y’all!
Message to your freshman self: If you push yourself, you can achieve more than you ever imagined.
Thing you won’t miss at all: Staying late for after-school practices.
Thing you will miss the most: Competing and all that it brings with it. The nerves, energy and excitement and that feeling of accomplishment you experience after a win.
