A Texoma church may soon be opening its door for congregants on the U.S. Highway 82 corridor in Sherman.
The Sherman Planning and Zoning Commission recently approved plans for Family of Faith Church, who plan to open a new church facility at 3200 E. Hwy. 82 between Baker Drive and Skaggs.
“We are a traditional Christian church with southern gospel music and a traditional church,” said, Stephen Hearrell, who serves as pastor for the church and developer for the project.
Hearrell described the church as non-denominational.
Family of Faith first opened its doors in October 2018, and currently has a congregation of about 70 people, Hearrell said.
The church currently occupies a building on Old Dorchester Road, but Hearrell said the congregation has outgrown its current space.
“We need the room,” he said. “We are leasing space now, but we do not have enough room for our needs.”
The church plans to build a new building on 1.8 acres of land along the highway. Plans for the building call for a 4,000-square-foot structure with space to seat about 70 and four classrooms.
“In the future we may be able to add on to it to fit more people, but that is what we are looking at for now,” Hearrell said.
With the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, Hearell said the church is just now returning to normal service, albeit with social distancing in place. For the past several weeks, the church congregation has been meeting remotely for worship.
“We went for six weeks where we video taped the services and broadcast those to our members,” Hearrell said. “We are just now getting back to where we can meet in person.”
Hearrell said the next step will be to take the project out for bids, with hopes to get construction underway in June.
“Our goal is to get in there on October 1,” he said. “The first Sunday of October is our anniversary, so if we can get in there on the first we will be able to be there on our anniversary.”
