Notes

With mom’s getting ready to celebrate their big day this weekend, please allow the Herald Democrat outdoors staff to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day!…As Texas continues to push towards reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, TPWD has announced that State Parks will resume limited overnight camping beginning May 18…Thanks to the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission held its first-ever virtual meeting earlier this week on May 4. The video conference was live streamed for public viewing on the Internet…At its May meeting, the Commission approved some antlerless deer hunting measures designed to increase doe harvest across the Sooner State. The OWCC also approved waterfowl season dates for this fall, reducing the midseason split from the previous 12 days to five days this fall. The 2020 season dates will also be the same now in both Zones 1 and 2. The first split will occur from Nov. 14-29 while the second split will run from Dec. 5-Jan. 31…The Oklahoma commissioners also accepted a large donation from Quail Forever. The Sooner State’s Quail Forever chapters donated a total of $10,172.50 to fund habitat improvement equipment and activities at several Wildlife Management Areas across the state. According to an ODWC news release, QF regional representative Laura McIver told Commissioners that those donated dollars, when coupled with matching federal funds, will provide more than $44,000 for wildlife habitat work to benefit quail and other wildlife species across Oklahoma…

Fishing Reports

As the COVID-19 pandemic crisis continues, TPWD advises anglers that if they plan to go fishing, check all local orders related to the current virus outbreak. Also check the status of the location you're planning to fish since some lakes, ramps, and access points may be closed… At Lake Texoma, water is stained; water temp is 70 degrees; and the lake is 0.74’ high. TPWD reports that striped bass and white bass are good on live bait and topwater baits when fish are near the surface. Diving birds are marking feeding schools on the surface throughout the lake. Largemouth bass are good for those fishing soft plastic creatures, swimbaits, and crankbaits in 6-14’ of water. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs by boathouses, marinas and brush piles in 8-15’ of water...At Lake Ray Roberts, water is stained; water temp is 71 degrees; and the lake is 1.15’ high. TPWD reports that largemouth bass are good on Texas-rigged soft plastic creature baits, crankbaits, and swimbaits in 6-12’ of water. White bass are excellent in 20-40’ of water on slabs and jigging spoons. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows in the marina, near bridges and over brush piles…At Lake Fork, water is lightly stained; water temps are 69-72 degrees; and the lake is 0.17’ low. TPWD reports largemouth bass are good on plastic worms, topwaters and Chatterbaits fished near roadbeds, submerged structure and points in 8-12’ of water. Hollow bodied plastic frogs in shallow grass and lily pads are also producing good bass. Crappie are fair on jigs and minnows fished in 12-20’ of water over brush piles…Longtime Lake Fork guide Randy Oldfield led a client to a 10.25-pound bass earlier this week…At the Blue River near Tishomingo, the river elevation is normal, water temp is 67 degrees, and the water is clear. ODWC says holdover rainbow trout are fair on in-line spinnerbaits, PowerBait and spoons fished along channels and creek channels. There’s no word on what’s working for fly fishers, but the guess here is that caddis dry flies, Zebra midges, and small streamer patterns should work. Meanwhile, largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass are fair on crankbaits, Flukes and topwater lures fished around brushy structure, creek channels, points, rocks and the shoreline…At Lake of the Arbuckles, elevation is above normal, water temp is 68 degrees, and the lake is clearing. Bass are hitting topwater lures and Flukes fished near shoreline areas with some being caught on Ned rigs and drop-shot rigs. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs fished at 6-12 ft. depths around brushy structure. Crappie are also fair on minnows and jigs fished around docks…

Tip of the Week

Looking for a great meal to provide for your mom this Mother’s Day weekend? Smoked brisket, ribs, or grilled burgers are several great options, of course. But for an outdoors touch, how about some fried crappie, a helping of cole slaw, some hush puppies, and your mom’s favorite beverage? That’s a tasty meal and one that she’ll likely remember for some time to come!
