While many industries continue to endure the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, local health care businesses are working to maintain normalcy.

Baylor Scott & White Surgical Hospital in Sherman has announced that it is still open, but staff is performing only those procedures that if deferred would pose a greater health risk to their patients.

The hospital recently furloughed staff members primarily involved in elective care, which is BSW’s core business.

"We hope to return impacted staff to service once our community navigates through this unprecedented time and our core business resumes," Baylor, Scott and White Media Relations Spokesperson Matt Olivolo said.

The hospital continues following strict guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for high-consequence infectious diseases to ensure the safety of those who do go to the hospital.

Olivolo did not say how long the furlough is expected to last.
