One of the hottest food trends on social media — from Pinterest boards to Instagram feeds — is the charcuterie board. For those who haven’t caught up with the lingo yet, that is a cheeseboard. Whether you’re planning for a kids party, girl’s night in, or holiday mixer for coworkers, picking the right charcuterie board elements can turn a few simple ingredients into a post-worthy edible delight.

Jennifer Taylor of Bon Appetit Y’all said the key to a great charcuterie board is to start with at least three cheeses for a large board that should include something soft, something crumbly or hard and a specialty cheese to be placed on the board whole. Then, add at least two kinds of bread or crackers.

“To keep fresh fruit like apples and pears from browning, dunk them into a bowl of salt water or sprinkle with lemon juice and toss,” Taylor advised. “Start building your board with placing down some of your spinach, then place your whole cheese (and) sliced cheeses. Next, place your bowls of olives, nuts, jams, etc. (and) your crackers/chips/bread in lines, fold your meats in and tuck (them) next to your cheese. Then place the fruits and finish with a dark berry such as blackberries or blueberries. To finish it off, place fresh rosemary sprigs or fresh flowers to round out the board.”

At Bon Appetite Y’all, Taylor said they love creating themed or regional boards.

“Let your imagination run wild! And if you just don’t have time, call (us) and we’d be happy to make a beautiful creation for your special occasion,” Taylor said.

For this piece, Taylor created three boards that would each be perfect for separate ocassions such as a kids party, girl’s night in and/or gathering of coworkers.

Ingredients for the kid’s board include M&M’s, green and red grapes, red Gala apples, green Granny Smith apples, strawberries, blueberries, caramel popcorn, pretzels, raspberries, snowball cookies, cheddar cheese, salami, apple sauce, and ginger snap cookies.

For the Italian board, ingredients include bread sticks, Bon Appetite Y’all’s homemade foccacia bread, salami, mozzarella balls, Asiago cheese, wine-infused Toscano cheese, cut and salted red tomatoes, spinach, rosemary marcona almonds, Italian castelvetrano olives, and green and red grapes.
