With National Breast Cancer Awareness Month gaining attention nation wide for cancer research this month, Women Rock Inc. will host its 9th Annual Bras for a Cause fundraiser on Oct. 26.
This year’s fundraiser will be hosted at the Hilton Garden Inn and Texoma Event Center, beginning at 6 p.m. and will feature live and silent auctions, dinner, drinks, music and other entertainment activities. Women Rock CEO LuAnn Daniel said the nonprofit was excited to select a new venue this year and expects to sell out with an anticipated attendance of 700-800 guests.
“So many people are affected by breast cancer,” Daniel said. “You don’t find very many people who haven’t had a friend or family member affected by it.”
Since its founding in 2010, Women Rock has expanded its services to breast-cancer patients and their families in 15 counties across North Texas and southern Oklahoma. The Sherman-based nonprofit aims to spread breast cancer awareness and education, and increase access to early detection procedures, like mammograms and other preventative screenings.
Daniel said she did not know how much money Bras for a Cause has generated in the last nine years, but the fundraiser’s annual take has grown well beyond the first-year total of $45,000.
“Last year I do know that we netted $184,000, which was about $24,000 more than expected,” Daniel said. “We’ve definitely been blessed by all of our community’s support.”
While a major goal of the evening is to raise critical funds, Daniel said it’s an equally important opportunity to celebrate the journeys of breast-cancer survivors and honor the lives of those who lost their fight.
“The survivors, although it really affects them deeply, whenever they lose a pink sister, they also love being able to let people know that they’re still thinking of them,” Daniel said. “The ones that have gone before us are in essence really making the road easier for all those who come after them.”
Tickets cost $75 per person and tables for ten can be reserved beginning at $750. Various sponsorship opportunities are still available. The Hilton Garden Inn and Texoma Event Center is located at 5015 U.S. Highway 75 in Denison.
