For children across the country, the summer season brings images of summer vacations, trips to the pool and other fun activities. However, the summer season is also the perfect time for book lovers to relax and catch up on a few books.


The following are the five most checked out children’s books of the summer:


1. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (1969)


The childhood classic, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, used collage to tell the story of a caterpillar who eats many foods before becoming a butterfly. The book has since gone on to to be widely regarded as one of the best children’s books with School Library Journal ranking it as the second best children’s picture book.


2. Fly Guy and the Frankenfly by Tedd Arnold (2013)


The 13th entry in the Fly Guy book series, which debuted in the early 2000s. The book tells the story of the main character, who has a dream about a gigantic fly monster similar to Frakenstein’s monster.


3. Fly High, Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold (2008)


The fifth entry in the Fly Guy series of children’s books. The book tells the story of Fly Guy as he accidentally is brought along on his first family vacation amid fears that he might get lost in the bigger world.


4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: the Ugly Truth by Jeff Kinney (2010)


The fifth entry in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series of books. The book follows Greg, who is dealing with puberty and the prospect of being a “late bloomer” compared to his friends.


5. Pete the Cat: Snow Daze by James Dean (2016)


The eponymous Pete the Cat enjoys a day off with his friends when school is cancelled due to snow. However, after day after day of snow days, be begins to question if there might be such thing as too many snow days. To date, there are more than 60 books in this book series.
