State troopers are investigating whether alcohol played a role in a head-on crash that killed a pregnant mother and her young son in Fannin County Friday.
In an emailed crash report, the Texas Department of Public Safety said the two-vehicle crash occurred shortly before midnight Saturday on State Highway 11 just three miles east of Whitewright. The report said passengers Juana Alvarez, 25, and her son Lucas Alvarez, 2, sustained fatal injuries after their pickup, which was going eastbound on Hwy 11 and was occupied by other family members, collided with a westbound truck which had drifted into the oncoming lane.
Juana and Lucas Alvarez were pronounced dead at the scene. Mrs. Alvarez was reportedly seven months pregnant.
Alvarez’s husband was transported to a McKinney hospital with serious injuries. Another three-year-old child in the family’s vehicle also sustained serious injuries and was flown to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. Updated conditions for the two were not immediately available Tuesday.
The driver of the other truck, a 20-year-old man from Celina, was seriously injured in the crash as well and transported to Medical City Plano for treatment. DPS said the man was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash and was suspected of being intoxicated.
Citing the ongoing investigation, DPS Staff Sgt. Mark Tackett said Tuesday that he could not discuss whether the driver had been charged or arrested.
