The city of Sherman has cleared the way for new roadway that will connect FM 1417 to the U.S. Highway 75 service road. The Sherman city council has approved a $4.77 million contract with Lynn Vessels Construction for the completion of the W. Travis expansion project.

The expansion of W. Travis comes as the city prepares for the opening of the new Sherman High School next year on FM 1417 and is looking to increase access to the school site. The contract covers the second and third phases of the roadway project and will culminate in the completion of the roadway.

“The second and third phases of West Travis will connect Moore Road to Sherman Crossroads, providing a direct connection from the highway to the new Sherman High School,” Community and Support Services Manager Nate Strauch said, via email. “And once the Highway 75 GAP project is complete, Travis will become the main thoroughfare leading to the school from East Sherman.

Plans for the project call four a four-lane roadway with a median dividing the road. The goal for the project was to create additional access to the school for residents on the east side of Sherman, city officials said in May.

The city has already completed the first two phases of the project, which included the creation of the two terminals at Crossroads Boulevard, near U.S. Hwy. 75, and FM 1417. Part of OB Groner Road was recently renamed West Travis Street and designated as the western terminus for the project.

With a construction firm in place, the project is ready to move forward with construction starting in August. The project is expected to be complete in time for the beginning of the 2020 school year, city officials previously said.
