Fannin County grand jurors recently declined to indict an officer who fired on a suspect after a chase that started at the execution of a narcotics search warrant. That suspect later died of his injuries.
Fannin County District Attorney Richard Glaser said it is his office’s policy to refer all officer involved shootings to the grand jury. He said Bonham Police Cpl. Kevin Connors was at the scene of the execution of a narcotics search warrant back in February when he and others noticed a vehicle being driven away from the area in a reckless and suspicious nature. Connors pursued the vehicle and after a short chase, the vehicle was stopped. Glaser said officers told Mark Royal Gilliam to get out of the car in a way that would allow them to see his hands and he failed to comply. Glaser said the video from the scene showed that it looked like Gilliam was going for a weapon.
Connors fired on Gilliam and Gilliam was flown to a Dallas area hospital. He later died of his injuries. Glaser said Gilliam was “very intoxicated” at the time of the incident. Bonham Police Chief Kevin Bankston said Connors has been with the department since June 22, 2016 and before that he worked with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy.
An indictment is a formal charge and not an indication of guilt.
