Senior citizens in Grayson County will be able to get a free vehicle checkup from Texas Department of Transportation specialists in Denison this Tuesday.
As part of the national CarFit program, TxDOT will welcome older drivers to the agency’s Texas Travel Information Center along U.S. Highway 75 from 2-4 p.m. for tips about staying comfortable and in control on the road. Technicians will be available to complete a 12-point inspection and teach drivers about a number of topics, including seat, pedal and mirror positioning.
“As we age, changes in our vision, flexibility and strength, range of motion, and even our size and height can make us less comfortable and capable behind the wheel,” TxDOT traffic safety specialist Monica Yates said in an emailed press release. “A free CarFit check helps the driver understand and use the safety features of their vehicle.”
CarFit was developed by AAA, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association in 2006. Older drivers interested in safety-refresher courses or occupational-therapy driving evaluation programs can learn more by contacting their local AAA office or AARP club.
The TxDOT Texas Travel Information Center is located at 6801 U.S. Route 69 in Denison and is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information about the local CarFit event, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
