Howe Police are asking for the public’s help in locating a driver who failed to stop last weekend at the scene of a U.S. Highway 75 motorcycle crash that ultimately proved fatal.

In an emailed press release distributed Friday, Howe Police said the motorcyclist, Benny Watkins, 76, of Farmersville was traveling south on the freeway at approximately 7:30 p.m. last Saturday when he struck a mattress lying in the roadway near West Farmington Road. Watkins was thrown from the motorcycle and sustained “severe head trauma” in the crash. The Vietnam War veteran was flown from the scene by air ambulance and transported to a Dallas-area hospital, where he ultimately died from his injuries Thursday.

Witnesses told police the mattress fell from the back of pickup traveling ahead of Watkins. The driver did not stop and continued south.

Those who witnessed the crash and those able to identify the driver involved are asked to call Howe Police Sgt. Kieth Milks at 903-532-9971 or send an email to kmilks@cityofhowe.org.
