Texas Department of Transportation’s Travel Information Center on U.S. Highway 75 north of Denison will host a holiday sober ride safety event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday with the theme “Santa and His Sleigh-fty Christmas.”

TxDOT Transport Funding Specialist Monica Yates will be on hand to share with holiday travelers an array of activities that simulate impaired driving. Visitors will also be able to visit with a Denison Police Department representative about the dangers and legal consequences of drinking and driving.

This event is part of TxDOT’s “Plan While You Can” sober ride education campaign aimed at reminding drivers to find a sober ride to and from festive events this holiday season, TxDOT officials said. In 2017, there were 2,469 alcohol-related crashes in Texas during the holiday season. Those crashes killed 96 people and seriously injured another 202.

As in years past, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be on hand to greet visitors and sit with them for holiday photos. The Denison center is located at Exit 74 on Hwy. 75 north of Denison. Exit right and follow the signs to the center if traveling north from Denison; if traveling south across the Red River, exit from the right lane at the Texas-end of the Red River bridge.

TxDOT’s 12 travel information centers promote tourism to and within Texas, provide visitors with a vital rest stop, offer vending for snacks and beverages, serve as a Wi-Fi hot spot, and provide travel assistance from travel counselors. The centers and counselors are there to create a positive first impression of Texas, help travelers choose travel routes and provide detailed information on destinations, events and road conditions.
