Anna Police are searching for man who is considered armed and dangerous after he allegedly shot and injured a man early Thursday morning.
Benito Gutierrez, 20, of Anna is wanted on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Chief Jeff Caponera said, at approximately 3 a.m., officers responded to a report of a shooting at the intersection of Chapel Hill Drive and Cedar Canyon Drive — a largely-undeveloped area of the Avery Pointe neighborhood. A press release distributed by the department Thursday morning said officers arrived and found the male victim, also an Anna resident, outside his vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. The man was taken to a McKinney hospital where he underwent surgery and remained in critical, but table condition Thursday afternoon.
“This was not a random shooting, this was a targeted incident and we believe that the suspect is already out of the area,” Caponera said. “There’s no immediate threat to the public.”
Caponera said Gutierrez fled the scene in a red passenger car, possibly a Ford. The department release said Gutierrez and the unidentified victim are believed to have known one another prior to the shooting.
“The details that led up to the disturbance and the shooting aren’t quite known at this point,” Caponera said. “We’re working on some good leads we’ve got and we’re looking to ascertain the exact motive.”
Those with knowledge of the incident are encouraged to call the Anna Police Department at 972-924-2848.
