The board of directors of the Sherman Economic Development Corp. is getting two new members.

The Sherman City Council appointed Gail Utter and Scott Bandemir to the board following an executive session discussion Monday evening. Utter is the managing director of the Utter Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors, while Bandemir is regional president with Independent Bank in Sherman.

Utter and Bandemir will be taking over the seats currently filled by current board chairman John Sild and former board chairman Greg Kirkpatrick.

During the same meeting those appointments were made, City Manager Robby Hefton also announced that SEDCO staff are now officially considered Sherman employees.

“We’ll continue to work with SEDCO closely, but just from an administrative standpoint, we think there’s some efficiencies to be gained by having them be city employees,” Hefton said.

In an email sent to city employees Monday, Hefton said the “tweaks” to the organizational structure will enhance the city’s team approach as Sherman “continues to grow and expand jobs and other services within the community.”

“This change will provide more streamlined, day-to-day support for their operations from a City staff that is already in place to handle administrative and support services such as payroll, benefits, human resources, etc.,” Hefton wrote. “Many other cities have their economic development operations as a City department, so this model has worked well for others.”

Despite the change, Hefton said SEDCO will remain a separate legal organization with its own building and the duties of its board would not change.
